TD Orchestra is partnering with MoArts (Morobe Arts Association, Inc.), an organization based in Lae, to bring a long-term cultural and arts development project to Lae and to PNG. Music programs in primary and secondary schools do not exist in PNG, and an orchestra currently does not exist in the country.
For this project, TD Orchestra will be working with the Lae City Authority, Lae City Tourism Bureau, University of Papua New Guinea, and the PNG government, among other organizations and entities, to bring TD Orchestra musicians to PNG annually to perform in festivals, collaborate with local artists, visit existing primary and secondary schools, and give research presentations.
The inaugural TD Orchestra tour to PNG will tentatively occur in 2025; the tour will focus on the development of music/arts schools throughout the country, and the establishment of the first ever international cultural exchange between the US and Lae, PNG. We are currently working towards signing a long-term agreement with the PNG government on a music and arts development project in the country, the first of its kind. The agreement will include TD Orchestra performing and touring there every year.
Our inaugural tour in 2025 will include interdisciplinary workshops, collaborations with local artists, research presentations, networking events with the PNG government, and then at least one collaborative concert with local artists. The concerts will include a portion of just TD Orchestra, then just local artists, and then a part where we all play together. Together with local artists, we will be performing and recording a new song written by a Bumayong teacher, to be used in the Better Lae Campaign.
TD Orchestra will be setting up music institutions in Lae and throughout PNG to teach any and all in the country who are interested in learning music.
